Govt Approves Free Ration Distribution Till December 2023

The government will provide completely free food to nearly 814 million eligible Indians till December 2023, withdrawing for a year even the nominal price charged to the beneficiaries for foodgrain supplied under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).


New Delhi, Dec 23: In a most important decision, the Union Cabinet on Friday determined to distribute free ration underneath the National Food Security Act (NFSA) for a length of one 12 months until December 2023.The pass will entail a burden of Rs two lakh crore which would be definitely borne via the government, Commerce and Food Minister Piyush Goyal instructed mediapersons.



More than 81.35 crore NFSA beneficiaries will gain from the move. Earlier, rice and wheat had been furnished at subsidised costs to the beneficiaries beneath NFSA.

Foodgrains, which have been being furnished beneath Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) considering April 2020, will additionally be subsumed underneath NFSA quota, Goyal informed. Thus PMGKAY might not be prolonged past Dec 2022.

Prior to Friday's decision, below NFSA, 5 kg of foodgrains per individual per month at Rs 2-3 per kg have been being provided. Families protected beneath Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) get 35 kg of foodgrains per month.Rice is given to the negative below NFSA at Rs three per kg and wheat at Rs two per kg underneath NFSA. Now all this would be given free of fee to the beneficiaries.
